Babylon Village Arts Council Art by the Falls Featured Artist Julia Drake
Creating art is an escape. It's an escape from reality into the real me of my own imagination. In my mind, there are no limits to what I can create besides the physical limitations of the technical aspects of art. Even with the physical limitations, I use my creativity to produce artwork that portrays whatever essence I want it to have. Art helps me express the inner workings of my mind and displays how I’m feeling or what I’m thinking about that I can’t put into words. After all, a picture says a thousand words.
My inspiration comes from many great artists who dive in between mediums such as painting, drawing, and animating. Legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki creates beautifully hand- drawn films that bring 2-D paintings to life. I’m inspired by works from him, as well as more traditional artists such as Dali. Besides these artists, I’m always gaining inspiration from what I observe on the streets I walk on, and the marsh landscape I see just outside my window.
I will continue my artistic endeavors throughout college and into my future career. I am an aspiring animator/ illustrator and have already been accepted into a few colleges for their BFA programs in animation (such as Rochester Institute of Technology and Lesley University). Not only will I continue with my creativity in my career, but I will also continue to create pieces for my own satisfaction everywhere I go. Art has played a major role in my life since the day I was able to pick up a pencil, and it will continue to be a major part of my life until I can no longer hold my pencil.
